TRANSITIONING FROM CORPORATE TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Seven years ago, I made the leap, leaving behind a twelve-year career in multi-nationals to dive headfirst into the roller-coaster ride of being a small business founder. I co-founded a technology consulting practice. Looking back now, it may seem like reckless timing—starting a business just months before a Kenyan election—but hey, that's a story for another day.

What Did I Learn?

So, what have I learned throughout these eventful seven years of building a technology consulting practice? Here are my favorites:

  1. The Value of Timing: Starting a business right before a Kenyan election was undoubtedly a high-risk move. The lessons from this experience have stayed with me, especially when it comes to structuring payment arrangements with clients and ensuring timely collections of fees. It's been a massively important learning curve.

  2. The Never-Ending Quest for the Right Team: One enduring challenge I've faced is assembling the right team for different seasons. It remains a tough nut to crack, and from observing other businesses, I've realized that finding the perfect team requires effort and patience. I have met and worked with many wonderful people during this time.

  3. There is Always a Silver Lining: Amidst the trials and tribulations, a glimmer of hope emerged during the Covid-19 pandemic—the rapid adoption of technology. Companies and individuals turned to digital solutions, and we joined forces with clients, assisting organizations in transforming and adapting to technology under these unprecedented circumstances.

  4. God Works Through Friendships: Friendships provide a radiant beacon, guiding us through the turbulent seas. Friendships bring solace in times of uncertainty, inspiration in moments of doubt, and unwavering support that fuels our creative spirit.

The Best Part? Flexibility and Growth

The most rewarding aspect of this adventure has been the flexibility it has granted me in raising my sons. Unlike the rigid confines of formal employment, I have had the freedom to shape my own schedule and be there for my kids as a dedicated father. This flexibility has allowed me to witness countless milestones firsthand while still pursuing my career goals.

Sure, there have been numerous sleepless nights and personal battles along the way, but somehow, things always manage to fall into place—eventually. I am reminded of Paulo Coelho's words: "When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it." It has not been an easy journey, with countless challenges to overcome. However, the lessons learned, the friendships forged, and the impact made along the way have made it all worthwhile.

I made many new friends, saw many new places, learnt many life lessons. I won some of the time and lost many times too. But I wouldn't have it any other way!
